K - I keep reading posts about trying this tortise food, muzuri ( sp). I thought per made food was not ideal for sullies. Am I missing something? Is there an age limit to give it to them? Mine is 6 and about 13 lbs. should I get some of this and keep iron hand?

RE: Muzuri?

Many people, me included, used to be of the opinion that "artificial" stuff is not good and should be avoided. I used to have all sorts of arguments and reasons against it. Time, experience and other people have taught me otherwise.

Mazuri is good stuff. I use it as a supplement to a good, varied, "natural" diet. NOT as a substitute. I feed it to all ages and sizes. Brand new hatchlings all the way up to the adults that produced them. I've been using for two years now and like what I see. You can certainly raise a healthy tortoise without it, but that does not mean it is not good or that it isn't beneficial.

My tortoises enjoy it and I havent seen anything that would cause me to be concerned. I think it would really benefit your tortoise.

It helps me feed Bob thru the winter when all the graze is frozen. I get a lot of old produce from Market of Choice once a week and I buy nice fresh stuff for him and I add Mazuri to all that and somehow we make it thru the winter. I spend $30 to feed him for one week even with all the donated food stuffs. Feeding an adult male Sulcata certainly is not cheap!!!

Wow.. Cool. I think I will order some and see how Willie does with it. How about telling me how much I should be feeding him? I know this is really a hard thing to answer but an estimate, opinion would be great... By the way.... Orchard hay is great... Thanks

I would start by soaking just a few pellets and mixing that with some favorite greens. If he likes it, you can then start feeding it by itself or keep on mixing it. You don't need a lot. I feed it twice a week usually. One draw back is that its messy. If he walks or lays in it I would give him a quick rinse or a soak at the end of the day.

Any suggestions as to wear to order it from? Also how about other seed or pasture mixes you recommend?

Lots of people on the site sell and ship Mazuri in smaller quantities, but you should be able to order a big bag at any horse feed store. It will take a long time to use up a big bag with one tortoise eating a small amount a couple of times a week.

If you look at the top right of any page on the forum there is an ad you can click on for Carolina Pet Supply. Lots of people order from them and report good results. Another one is sulcatafood.com. I found this one on the recommendation of another breeder: http://www.groworganic.com/seeds.html Their prices are very reasonable and so far the quality is good. I bought three types of pasture mix and they are all sprouting for me in the middle of winter.

Thanks, I'll check it out

Ok I'm an idiot and a total city girl, but what kind of pasture mix do I get. None of it matches up with what I think he should be getting. Keep in mind I'm on infomation overload and well might be missing something..

I use both zoo med and mazuri. I use a small amount of spring mix, some yellow squash and some cactus chopped up real fine. I then cut a huge handful of orchard grass up real fine and then soak some zoo med and mazuri for a minute in warm water then throw it all in a bag and give it a shake, Jessie eats it all up. Jay
