Dory, my first tortoise I've ever owned, arrived about two weeks ago. I bought her from turtleshack. She was born June 25, 2013 so she's barely two months old. I've done what feels like countless hours of research on everything from lighting, to food. She's doing really well eating, active, bathing etc.. I guess my only real questions right now are about the food, as there is a lot of contradicting information out there. I've been feeding her dandelion greens, mustard greens, collard greens, prickly pear, and mazuri pellets. She won't touch the mustard and collard greens but likes everything else. What else do you feed your hermanns? Are they also picky eaters? Thanks in advance. :)

You can also add in a spring mix....be sure to offer daily warm water soaks and some outside natural sun time (100 % supervised of course)...

I've been feeding my guys lots of common mallow, ice plants/sedum, plantain weed, dandelion, and grass. Haven't tried any commercial, processed things, yet. Just taking advantage of the warm months for now.

Hermann's and other Northern Mediterranean Testudo should be fed a good quality, varied diet of 80-85% greens and the rest vegetables. This time of weeds are plentiful. Food can include: dandelion, broad & narrow leaf plantain, clover, crown vetch, alfalfa, lambsquarter, chicory, sow thistle and much more. Grocery store greens can include: Romaine lettuce, dandelion, escarole, endive, chicory, parsley, arugula, kale and spinach. Vegetables can include: squashes, pumpkins, green & yellow beans, peas, carrots, sweet potato & corn. In addition, finely ground timothy, Bermuda and/or alfalfa hay can be offered for them to browse on.
A good source of calcium, powdered for babies, cuttlebone for larger tortoises, should be available for them to consume at all times. With a good quality varied diet vitamin supplements should not be needed.
Drinking water should also be available at all times in a small, easily accessible drinking container.
