We burned some ant beds earlier this week......it was pretty neat!! My husband poured some gas/oil mix (for the weedeater) on them, concentrating on the holes, and I threw a long candle match on them......POOF!!!.....with the oil mixed in the gas, they burned for a long time. Once in a while, they would get a fresh bit of air inside and we would hear another little "poof".......then when we dug into them with a shovel, and they re-ignited with the gush of air. When they finished burning, we turned the dirt over with the shovel and threw new matches on them to make sure all the fuel was burned up. It was so much fun!!!

Poor little ants.
I used to burst them with a magnifying glass when I was a kid.
Horrible.
I rather like ants.
But know they can be a nuisance

It does sound like I enjoyed it a little too much!! But, I'm going to do it again, maybe even this evening when they are all back in their mounds!!

The ones we burned earlier were either IN the new enclosure, or right outside the perimeter.....I can't be having the ants attacking my sweet Otis!!

I hate killing anything - but I would make an exception for arsonists! Two of the beautiful mountains in my area are totally black thanks to idiot arsonists. There was what seems to be co-ordinated attack on the mountains the other week during the dry spell and the fire service were fighting about 12 at the same time - they were totally stretched to the limit. Anyone needing a fire engine at home would have had a struggle getting one. All those poor creatures in the bracken wouldn't have stood a chance.

Anyway enough of my rant! My question is are black ants a problem for torts or is it just the fire ants I've read about here?

Yeah, arsonists cause a lot of damage in the countryside here too.
So, the government put public service announcements on tv warning against it and imprisoned arsonists for several years.
But people watching thought 'Oh, what a good idea! They won't catch me', and the cases of countryside arson increased.
I don't think that any ants are a problem for tortoises here, but not sure about Welsh ants!.
Our black ants are absolutely no bother, but I duffer them when they appear in my kitchen!
English black garden ants were no bother either.

That's good I don't have to have mass murder of ants on my conscience - I would learn to live with it if I thought they were going to hurt my tort though.
Welsh ants are the worse - they sit in the corner in their Welsh hats drinking tea all day!

Some of my relatives, long before my time, actually dressed like that, so my grandma told me.

Mine too - that's my Ants Blodwyn, Myfanwy and Rhonwyn above!!;)

The kids still dress up like that on St David's Day and there's many a Welsh hat to be found at rugby internationals.

Yeah, many a happy day at the old Cardiff Arms Park, though I wore daffodils or leeks, not the hat.

Yeah can be a bit annoying if you're behind someone wearing one. I was at the Millennium Stadium for the last S African match and the Irish game - no atmosphere like it when the Welsh are singing!
