It does seem a bit like the vet took advantage of the situation. Hopefully it was to reassure you as the owner and didn't cause any harm or cost.
Through various recent anecdotes, I understand that tobacco can have a funny effect on certain reptiles. I have heard several times that people burn tobacco in their houses to get rid of tokay geckos and a friend was telling me just last weekend about witnessing a spectacle where someone tied a small wad of tobacco to a long stick and waved it in front of a tokay who went for it, and within seconds it had fallen from the roof and was convulsing on the floor, allowing for easy retrieval.
Anyway, I'm happy no such effects were witnessed here.
