Hi, I bought a male Herman tortoise three years ago. He is about 8 inches long, 730 grams, and I have no idea how old he is. Is he normal?

I don't think a tortoise can be overweight as long as he acts normal he should be fine.

Hello and Welcome. There is no way to say if it's normal. All grow at their own pace. If he has proper enclosure, heat, humidity, diet and space to roam then he's doing fine.

Can you double check the weight and Straight Carapace Length of your tortoise please?

Here is how to measure the SCL of your tortoise properly

For Hermann's weighing over 500 grammes, you can calculate something called the Jackson Ratio and with 8 inches being approximately 20cm your tortoise comes out at severely underweight.

Here's a Jackson Ratio calculator
