Mystery roadside tortoise

I Saw a tortoise crossing the road, so I had my dad stop the car and I carried to the other side where it was headed. It was black all over, I live in Florida, and I was wondering what type of tortoise it is?

Probably a gopher tortoise. I live in FL too, and see them now and again. Good save! They're a threatened species, or need threatened status but don't have it yet... I get confused about which one.

Are you sure it was a tortoise, and maybe not a box turtle?

I don't think it was a box turtle, because it didn't close up, and it didn't have a box turtle like shell pattern (or any shell pattern at all)

How big was it? If it was longer than, say, 6" it was not a box turtle. I just saved a gopher tortoise out of the road a couple days ago, It was about 14" long and so dark gray that it almost looked black...
