This guy was crossing the street in my neighborhood. I live in Florida in a developed neighborhood for 11 years and never encountered a tortoise so found it strange. I'm almost positive it's a Florida gopher. Wanted to come on and just make sure. Neighbors said they have seen him frequently cross the street. So afraid he will get hit by a car. ☹️ I should have taken more pics but only got this one.

So cool, the tort and the fact you didn't pick it up because it was lost. Kudos to you. A expert in ID will come along soon it's not me. Sounds right though.
Looks like a gopher tortoise from what I can see in the picture.
