Every Saturday I bring my dogs to the beach. While we're there, I usually look for flipped box turtles who fall trying to make their way up the slopes of the beach. As you all know, turtles lungs are on their backs so they suffocate if they can't right themselves with their neck. So, they relieve pressure by pooping. The first female was lucky I found her, but the male my dog found unfortunately flipped over, suffocated and cooked in the sun. When I picked up the shell, bones fell out. These things happen, so always keep an eye out for our little friends.

It's a cruel way they were shaped and without a proper fool proof way to right themselves.
But it is what it is
Glad you were able to help one.

Interesting fact of nature - I didn't know that about getting stuck in the flipped over position. I guess with sand being so "moveable", they get no leverage pushing against it with their neck and so remain flipped over. Nature at work I guess. Glad you were able to help one out - good for you!
