Hi all,

Just wanted to share with you guys a pretty cool idea that my husband came up with for Joys new winter home (pics in photo section). He mounted a small web cam in the upper corner. I have an app on my phone that allows me to access this camera from anywhere :). This allows me to peek in on her whenever I want, without actually disturbing her :). It also puts my mind at ease when I'm out and I start to get paranoid about the heat lamps. I guess he got tired of hearing, "you don't think those lamps are going to catch fire, do you?" Yep, I'm a worrier :). Just thought I'd share because I'm really liking being able to check in on our little gal whenever I want.

Great idea for settling your nerves and his:p What will you do when or if you have human kids,:D you can't even put them in a cage, I tried, they know how to unlock them :D:D. Just picking, I think it is great you have such love and concern for your tort. They are great little family members:D

Hey slowpoke, I'm really not sure what he used.. We already had the camera. The app I use on my phone is called d-link light. I'm not sure how he set it all up though with the router. He does network administration for a living and honestly, after 5 minutes of "network" chatter, I tend to tone him out :). If you have any questions about it, I'd be happy to ask him.

That is cool. We had a member here that had a bank of cameras in his yard with his galpagos and other tortoises, and anyone could go to the site and view them in real time. He figured it was better to have 1000's of eyes on his tortoises, instead of just his. Some times I'd go take care of his tortoises while he was at work or out of town and he call me as soon as I got there and ask me how the tortoises I was standing in front of were doing.

My boyfriends brother has security cameras around his house and turned one to his torts and ever since I saw that I've been looking into a way to do this, how much did it cost you? Well how much would it cost me is more what I'm trying to get at.

I don't have a stand-alone webcam, but occasionally I set my laptop on a chair above the enclosure and use the webcam that's built in.

I'm a big worrier, too. I actually avoid using the webcam most of the time because I walk an hour to work and back. I once had it on at work, and it was fantastic to see how Emrys behaved when I wasn't around, but I ended up feeling panicked knowing that if anything happened to him or a fire did happen, it would take me an hour to get home. I couldn't bare the thought of seeing something happen and not being able to get to him. I decided it was safer not seeing it...

His environment is very safe and he's never flipped, but there's always that fear.

That is a great idea. I would be interested in knowing what your husband used. I have considered something like that for when I have to be away for a couple of days. If somehow my tort turned upside down, I could call a neighbor to go take care of it. Would you mind asking him, if it is not too much trouble? What a nice husband you have

If you already have a webcam to use, and somewhere else you can watch it from, I really recommend http://www.camstreams.com/

You just install a little piece of software. Took me about five minutes to set up my webcam, and then you're given a page the same as this:

http://tortcpj.camstreams.com/

Whenever I turn my webcam on, it shows on that page.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a stand alone webcam for indoor use?

Have you thought about putting the heatlamps on a timer?..you can buy the timer in the lighting section of home stores..and you can have them turn on and off...rotating the heat source to put your mind at ease

I have had a tort cam for livingstone for the last 2 years at least. Its the best thing I ever did. I have never been able to get it on my mobile phone though... Please ask your husband exactly what app he used and how he set it up.

Thanks.

Sorry, I haven't checked this thread for a couple of days. My husband is at work right now, but when he comes home I will ask him for the details. I can even post some screenshots from the camera :)
