Hi everyone! New to the forum and new to turtles!! We found a turtle in my parents backyard and my 8yr old decided she wanted to keep it. I have made an outdoor habitat but need to know what kind of turtle that it is to make sure it has a large enough water feature and type of food. Can someone assist as we’ve looked up options online and can’t figure out! Aren’t sure if she’s a box, Reeves or Mud or something else! She did devour worms and grubs we gave her- also ate lettuce and strawberries! Thanks in advance!

It may be illegal in your state to take a turtle from the wild. If I were you I'd:

1. check to make sure it's not illegal to keep it
2. make every effort to find the turtle's owner

Yes, I agree with a couple of those who posted above. It is a Three-toed Box Turtle.

I would not take it from the wild, but if it piqued the interest of your daughter, consider rescuing a turtle or tortoise. There are always lots in need!
