Great space, here is what I noticed (for starters );
The coil style uva/uvb bulb....those have been known to harm sensitive baby eyes---you can use a MVB or a long strip uva/uvb bulb in addition to a day heat bulb or ceramic heat emitter ....just saying
The water dish, those are awesome for stretchy slinky snakes that can curve up and over edges with ease...but for a stiff shelled critter it can prove a challenge to flip over and back right side up and can cause a bad drowning scene for the baby....you can use a shallow terra cotta type planter saucer (you know, the saucer that sits under a planter to catch water so it does not run all over),....
And the top of the enclosure...perhaps set up some type of top to cover at least half to allow for heat and some humidity to stabilize....
Yep, ditch the water dish & bulb for sure. A Zoo Med PowerSun UV Mercury Vapor Lamp is well worth the $ because you get UV & heat from it. & I tried everything before taking the advice of using a terra cotta plant saucer (the dish you put under the planter) it really is the best for height & traction.
I live in malaysia, temperature mantain at 30°-31 degree c , I also have power sun, when I put it on, temperature rise to 38-40° therefore, I changed it to UVB 200 only.
You need to:
1. Get rid of the water bowl right away, before he flips and drowns.
2. Get rid of the coil type bulb right away, before it burns his eyes.
3. Get rid of the colored bulbs. Use white light for daytime and a CHE for night time.
4. Get rid of the little white pebbles before he eats one or more.
5. Get rid of the humidifier and instead close in the top.
6. Mount those clamp lamps without using the clamps. Hang them from over head in some secure safe way.
7. Get rid of the hay in the hide, before it molds.
8. Get rid of the fake turf, before he eats it.
9. Get rid of the larger white rocks before he tips over on them.
10. Add a humid hide.
11. 38-40 is a great temp under the Powersun bulb. 30 is fine for the ambient, but your tortoise needs a warmer basking spot.
Hi Jc. Here are my suggestions:
1. Those water bowls can literally kill your tortoises. They can flip while trying to climb in or out of them and drown. Some tortoises will just avoid them. Terra cotta plant saucers work the best.
2. Those enclosures are too small. Both tortoises need at least 4 times that much space.
3. I would remove the hay from that damp environment before it molds.
4. I prefer covering the top to prevent the loss of heat and humidity, rather then pumping in more humidity.
5. Looks like you are using the fake grass turf too. I don't know about the radiated, but that sulcata will eventually try to eat it and it could cause an impaction if he is successful. I wouldn't take that risk.
Tom,
Thxxxx very much for yr advice.. much appreciate
yea i did removed those stuffs so it won't get harm of my baby sulcata. i do understand that water is part of important for tortoise and yet, i concern that he fall down from the pool...Therefore, beside the water bowl I put some of big stone just in case he fall down...wht do u thk is that ok? he can flipped back himself by the way..the hay I did changed every week before get molds..in fact my enclosure close to window with sunshine in daytime..I changed flat type of fake turf so that he can't bite it..but so far he don't eat the coconut bark or do I need to change others instead of coconut bark? Need yr opinion to get better environment...thank you.
