I acquired a box turtle recently that wasn't being properly cared for...inadequate food and water, improper lighting and heat source and it has been kept in a tiny aquarium in a vape shop. UGH! I have been trying to sort through all of the info online on how to care for this little darling and I'm glad I have finally found you, as someone recommended a forum.

I believe that we're off to a good start but I know that it will be a learning process. I don't even know if my turt is male or female or the species, although I suspect three-toed. Can anyone tell me if the white spots on the shell appear to be shell rot?

Thanks...appreciate any help and welcome any comments.

Hi, and welcome to the Forum!

No, not shell rot. Some sort of scraping incident. It's not causing him any harm or pain.

Could be a three toe (Terrapene carolina triunguis) or might possibly be a young gulf coast (Terrapene carolina major).
