Hello and WELCOME . Did he buy the turtle or catch it from the wild? They really should not be taken from the wild and usually don't do really good. I would put it back where it was found, if he caught it. You can find a breeder or rescue or even craigslist to get him one that would do a lot better in captivity. Other then that good luck. You should be able to find lots of help here.

He found it wandering around the golf course they went to. And he's only eight, so he'd be heart broken if we took it back, and my mom and her boyfriend aren't going to want to buy one. We've seen the turtle eat already, and I have a variety of different foods.
And we only have the one turtle for now, until I can talk my mom into more.

Welcome! What are you keeping him in? Any pictures?

I have him in a 55 gallon for now. I'd like to get something bigger for him soon, but his arrival was kind of unexpected. I'll get pictures tomorrow.
