Oh gosh the oral ones were baytril but couldn’t get any down him so not sure which the injection one is?
Ah, unfortunately it doesn’t sound like the vet you’ve been to is very up to date on tortoise treatment😣baytril is very outdated and not considered the safest anymore. It can be so difficult finding a good vet for them.
Theres a list on the tortoise table of uk vets, it’s where we found ours and they were brilliant, shall I find the link for you? Might be worth looking at🙂

The one we happened to use was chipping Norton, the exotic vet is called Natalie and she was everything you could hope for in a tortoise vet!

Thank you for the link! Funnily enough my vet is on there? X
Interesting.. some are simply on there because people have taken their torts there in the past so they’ve been added to the list, it can be a bit of trial and error when it comes to distinguishing the more up to date from the less so😣I think we just happened to drop very luck where we are

I’m going to have to ring around but at the minute we have the first appointment of the day tomorrow and really want to get on top of this infection so it doesn’t get any worse! But will definitely try and do abit of trial and error around when we are in a bit of a better position but will mention about the different anti biotics! Thank you for being so helpful ☺️

Hello!
If it's confirmed RI you can do some adjustments to help your tortoise fight it:
1. Raise ambient temperatures to 27C day and night.
2. Change the substrate to coco coir and orchid bark as you planned. Sometimes soil can be irritating to eyes and nose.
3. His loss of appetite can be attributed to loss of sense of smell. Try hand feeding him some greens with distinct smell like ruccola (rocket) or cilantro. Look if you can get him some Mazuri (Nutrazu) 5M21 pellets. Also put him against feed bowl right after the soaking.

These measures in cases of mild RI can help on its own. However, if you won't see any improvements in 3-4 days - go to the vet.

Oral antibiotics are really hard to administer and you have to use "dirty tricks" like mixing with it Mazuri and so. Baytril is a well-known medication with adverse side effects (especially when used in injections) so usually it's used as a "second line of defence". Vets often start with Ceftazidime (Fortaz) in injections and if it doesn't work switch to Baytril or, preferably, do tests to identify a specific infection.

And there is another UK vet recommendation:

Please, keep us updated!

Hello! Thank you so much for this I will be making the changes today as I have most of the stuff now for his new enclosure only thing I’m struggling for is the orchid bark as I’ve had to order online but not coming till the end of the week. But I will certainly be asking the vet to use fortaz first and declining a vitamin injection. I have tried hand feeding him but he is not accepting anything from me I think it may be due to he’s been here less than a week so may possibly be still nervous but will give him a try with the foods you’ve suggested. Thank you so much for all your information. He’s been here less than a week but I can’t stop worrying haha!

Bark can be added later, no problems here.
If hand-feeding doesn't work - don't push him. He is definitely stressed out with all the changes (it takes at least a couple of weeks for them to adjust but they should start eating earlier). If you can offer him what he has been fed before - this could also help.

Did you go back to that vet today or leave it in the end to see if the changes work? How’s your little guy doing?🙂
Hello, yes went back to the vet and told her my suggestions and we started the antibiotics the Fortaz one. We made all the changes today that were suggested so just going to see how we get on over the next few days fingers crossed we have to go back every 3 days for an injection which the course is about 5 injections so we have everything crossed 🤞🏽

I hope he will get well soon! Keep posting updates, please.

A small but important suggestion on the enclosure:
Lamp clamps are unreliable, you need to add some extra measures to prevent it from falling: using two straps like this: https://lhdottie.com/emt-one-hole-straps/tw38 , or zip ties. Or you can move basking area to the center and hang the lamp from the same wooden pole as UVB lamp.
