I live in Maryland and it's still on the warm side here. I have my AC on now...

I think it would be safe. It's not too cold yet where it can't find a place to hibernate.

If you want a pet turtle/tortoise, I would recommend going with a breeder who doesn't take them from the wild. Someone who breeds them for profit is making no negative impact on wild populations.

Yes. It is perfectly safe to put it back. It is acclimating to the change in weather and the longer you keep it indoors, the harder it will be on the turtle. Thank you! Good choice!! If you want to wait until spring, I'll send you a captive bred box turtle or two for free. All you have to do is pay shipping.

Your Eastern Box turtle is native to NY, and you need a permit to own it. Most are slowing down now and getting ready to hibernate. This is the last week that I'm feeding mine. You are doing a great thing by putting it back where you found it.
