Hi,
im new to having a pet tortoise And after a long time of thinking about which tortoise to get I decided on a dwarf Hermann and got a 1 year old. I have a vivarium that is 86cm length by 42cm height and 37cm depth, I was advised when I got my tortoise that I should have the UVA/B bulb, a 40w red basking bulb for the viv size for during the day and a heat pad for night time. during the day with the UVB bulb and basking bulbs on the temperature gets to 90F to 95F on the hot side and 80F to 85F on the cooler side. My tortoise seems to go to the far corner of the cool side and sleep most of the day there. i have only had my tortoise for 3 days am I just worrying or is the vivarium too hot during the day. At night I turn off both the uvb light and the basking light and I use a heat pad , the night temperature is between 70-75F.

Welcome..... new torts are often scared and burrow in until they feel safe. Also, make sure your temperature gauge is down where your tort is, not half way up the side of the enclosure. Those pet store gauges are notoriously not very accurate. Good digital ones, with a remote probe work much better. Check your substrate as well. Looks like pine or aspen or cedar shavings, usually not recommended.

Heres some good info to read up on.

Thanks for your reply, I have read the care sheet and I think i Am probably fussing too much and scaring my little tort. I’m going to let him settle in for a few days and just put his food in and change his water, the substrate is hemp but think at weekend I might add some earth. I Just tried to move the thermometers but they are really stuck so I will get a digital one at the weekend.
