I just built Omega an out door pin, and he was doing great outside for a few days. Then 2 days ago I went outside to check on him and he was gone! I think something got him, but what could it have been. I have seen fox, raccoon and opossum around here but I wouldnt think they would eat a tortoise. He was about 5 months old so still just a little guy. It had brick walls, two bricks high. I don't think he could have gotten out, but any thoughts on this? Have those animals been known to take small torts?

It's a sad day.

No, I was on my way to Lowes to buy some chicken wire to put on as a roof, but I was too late.

Or dug into the ground? We 'lost' RV a few times when she dug herself into the grass in a tree well. I hope your baby is safe.

I live in west Kentucky. I have searched pretty well. But I'm going to walk my yard a few more times.

5 months is too small to be outside. It was probably picked up by a crow or bird that size. I'm sorry, but he's gone. Possibly he's dug down into the dirt so search really carefully before you give up...

Hi Josh:

I don't think he escaped. If a bird didn't get him, then he's dug into the grass and in among the roots. They hide very well. They've had eons to practice because small tortoises are prey. Get down on your hands and knees and go over the pen inch by inch with your fingers.

Everyone here is correct. They are very good at hiding, but it is also likely that something got him overnight. Some days it takes me 10 minutes to find a 5" sulcata in a weedy overgrown 15x30' pen. Several times I've thought one was gone, only to find it dug into the base of some thick weeds later on.

This is why I never recommend keeping little ones outside fulltime. Too many things can happen. All my little ones sleep safe and sound in their indoor enclosures behind locked doors in a secure room.

How sad... any updates? I hpoe he comes back. I lost a box turtle in high school and he came back 6-8 months later. Lets hope your little guy is a survivor and finds his way home.
