Hello,

I am a first time tortoise owner that despite my best efforts, have been seeing a decline in my tortoise’s health. We’ve had her for about two years now and she’s somewhere around twelve years old as a best guess. She’s been way too quiet lately; not leaving her hide unless forced to, and almost immediately crawling to a corner to sleep when put outside or really anywhere where there are corners to find. She’s also at an almost complete refusal to eat. We’ve been feeding her all sorts of different kinds of nutritious vegetation; fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, tortoise supplements, etc. etc. However, now more recently we’re just trying to get her to eat anything at all. Which means mostly just offering her red leaf lettuce on the side of supplements and vegetables. (We’ve tried mixing it all together but then she just ignores the whole thing). Today’s breakfast offering is apples. We’ve also tried calcium supplements with no behavioral changes from her.

She spends most of her days outside (temp has been consistently around 80 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny) and is brought inside where she has a heat lamp over a large planter box with a hide and reptile bark to dig in. She is soaked at least three to four times a week, but we’ve been upping the consistency to nearly every day with her decline. She always has access to a variety of safe foods and there’s nothing she could have ingested that could have harmed her.

She’s tried a similar stunt before, last fall where she tried to hibernate/brumate early and we had to convince her not to per vet recommendation. But it’s not even close to cold now. It’s 80-100 degrees outside and then she comes inside to a heat lamp. We’re just not sure what else we could possibly try or could otherwise be doing wrong. Ideas, advice, recommendations, and even finger shakings at this point are all appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi, could be a variety of things. One of my recent threads, I stated how all of my Russian torts have virtually disappeared.

They aren't as nearly as active/ eating, and have been spending their days burrowed underground during this heat.

Do you see anything visibly wrong with her? And how long has been going on?

Oh how odd. I suppose they’re rather sensitive tortoises?

No, nothing visibly wrong. I’ve given her multiple thorough check overs and there’s nothing different in any way. It’s been about two to three weeks. She started acting funky and just went down a little bit at a time since then. She’s so picky that it wasn’t that odd at first when she skipped a meal or two. Then it got concerning after that- ‘specially with the increase in sleeping

Where in CA are you? Different advice for Palm Springs VS. Pismo Beach.

What are the temperatures in the indoor enclosure? Basking area, cool side, warm side, and overnight low?

What other lighting and heating do you have other than the heat lamp?

Stop offering fruit. It wreaks havoc on their gut flora and fauna.

Pictures of each enclosure will give us insight.

Have you seen this?

I was also wondering about the indoor enclosure lighting details, and also if any changes had been made to the setup.
Can you please post some pictures of your tortoise and the setup?

@Tom and @TammyJ
This is her indoor set up at the moment. We’ve gone through a few different instances of hides used- this is the one we’ve settled on for now, and is also her favorite so far. The substrate is a mixture of reptile bark and ‘organic’ soil. It’s mostly the bark, she’s just been digging. No changes have been made in her enclosure aside from the hide. She does spend nearly all day outside where we have a mixture of concrete and dirt. With also a sunny side and a shaded side. The dirt out there is also tortoise safe because it’s mostly the ‘organic’ tortoise approved stuff- or at least as we researched it as.
Directly under the lamp is around 90 degrees. The opposite side is whatever the room temp is so at the time of taking the picture- 78.
Humidity of the room is roughly 79 and under the lamp that drops to around 50.
