Heck no! Just keep the oranges raked up. Even if he eats one or two of them, its not going to harm him. And the leaves aren't tasty, so he won't eat them.
Okay great! Thanks Yvonne. I have an area with an orange tree in the middle and walls on 2 sides so I will only have to use 2 rows of cinder block for a CDT pen. It should work for a couple years. I hate moving !
There's an orange tree in my YF tortoise pen. I can't keep ahead of the ripe ones, and sometimes they fall to the ground. The YF tortoises CAN eat fruit, so I don't worry about the fallen fruit, however, the skins are a bit beyond the tortoises' taste/capabilities. I'll find fruit with a couple bites into the skin, but they never go beyond a bite or two.
I went to a woman's house several years ago to pick up a found tortoise. The woman had a whole bunch of desert tortoises of her own, and a backyard citrus orchard. So many trees that there wasn't much else in the yard. There were grapefruits and oranges and lemons all over the ground. She said her tortoises ate them all the time. Ignorance is bliss, so they say. I wouldn't allow a whole bunch of eating, but a bit won't harm your tortoise.
My mom is moving in with us and she is good at keeping up with the plants (watering & picking fruit), so I doubt any will land on the grown. Good to know they are okay . Did I mention I HATE MOVING!!!!!!!!!
