I posted in January that my Russian, Nick came out early. Seems there was a reason. He has a respiratory infection and is now on meds from the vet. I wish I would have brought him into the garage in the heated cage back then. I'm sure he would still have needed a vet visit but I bet he would have gotten there sooner.

Vet visit was $42
Baytril and saline $38

All and all not bad.

I'm keeping him warm 75 minimum and soaking him every day. He has not eaten that i know of but he has food.

Sorry to hear that. What is the lesson here? Hibernate indoors? Don't hibernate? Your climate is a little cooler than mine, but pretty close. I'd love to learn from your experience.

Murray:

When I first had russian tortoises here, I allowed them to hibernate outside. I had quite a few at that time...maybe about 20 or more. Because we get so much rain here during the winter, I lost most of those Russian tortoises. When spring finally rolled around only half of the tortoises came up.

After that I always made it a point to box them up towards the end of summer before they dug in and I couldn't find them.

Tom, i think Yvonne is correct, just to wet in the soil here. Its mostly clay and it holds water well when there is NO sun no it.
