I just cleaned out this old garden of 2 foot tall weeds. It is 10ft by 10ft and in a couple of weeks will be the home of my Russian tortoise. I am going to make the borders higher approximately two feet higher and add a lid wtith hinges and locks. The lid will be part wood (for some shade) and the rest hardware cloth or welded wire.

I will plant and add landscape after it is fully constructed.

By the way it is south facing and I'm not sure how deep the wood goes. It is at least 6-12 in.
I can always build up the borders and just add more soil.
Am I on the right track? Any suggestions?

Looks promising! I recently saw a neat way of building an outdoor enclosure. If you're going to add soil, you could make a trench along the existing border. Like this:

Since the border is already a few inches deep, you won't have to raise it. But I don't have any experience with this type of 'fencing' :) It could cause some problems when it rains, I think..

Looks great! However, a higher border would prevent your tort from:

a) trying to climb out and consequently
b)escaping,

GOD forbid.
