My Tortoise is now 4! I want to build an outdoor enclosure. I've picked a great spot in the backyard that has sun for most of the day. My concern now is the materials that I can use to build the enclosure. I am thinking of a 'log' type enclosure but I am not sure if it's OK to use treated wood. It's just for the walls and the top of the enclosure where the chicken wire will go to keep out intruders. For his hide house I am thinking either redwood or cedar. Any thoughts on this? I also am trying to think of ways to keep him from digging out from under the enclosure.

What species and size? Where are you?

I use slumpstone block to make my enclosures and then I use pressure treated 2x4s to make a frame and attach wire for the lids. Chicken wire is not very strong. If dogs or predators are a real concern, welded wire or hardware cloth will work much better than chicken wire.

I would not use cedar or redwood for the house. Cedar gives off toxic fumes. I use regular plywood and 2x4s. Then I prime and paint the outsides.

Hermann's about 4". I'm in Southern California. We have racoons, opossums, cats, hawks, etc. The hardwire cloth looks much sturdier. I'll look into the block idea!
