Looking to do an outdoor enclosure for a tiny Hermanns tortoise. Would a sandpit of 30” by 30” (76x76cm) be a decent size or not?

He’s 2 and male so quite small

Thanks

Ideally, temporary outdoor enclosures, even temporary ones should be larger to allow your tortoise to freely roam around to their heart's content. If possible consider planter boxes with high walls, a generous level of substrate, and plenty of shade.

Better to plan ahead and buy/build a sufficiently sized outdoor enclosure then to buy/build something your tortoise is just going to outgrow (that sandpit may already be too small for your tortoise) in a matter of months.

Thanks I am just looking for that to be temporary - I’m building a wooden one with good high sides but groundwork is taking longer than anticipated as the ground is rock solid in the UK at the moment!!

The proper one is about twice the size with lots of good sight barriers but going to take time

My sandpit is 3ft by 3ft and it’s ample room as a temporary enclosure as my tort is so small
How much does your baby weigh I’m just trying to work out In my head how big he is.

He weighs 101g to be honest he’ll only be out in it evenings and weekends (when I’m not working basically) so that even though it’s secure I can keep an eye on him

Update:

He’s been out today and loved it!

He definitely thanks @katieandiggy for the nemisia suggestion!!

Got a bit chilly though and settled down for a nap in the pot!!

Going to have his first full day out tomorrow as long as the weather isn’t too bad!

Looks great! He will love it! Mine was out all day today. It’s been so hot as you know, so I sprayed the enclosure with the hose a few time. As soon as he hears the water, he comes out from wherever he is just to get wet.
Mine is 75g today.

Bless him!! Had a heart attack moment earlier as Tim was outside and I couldn’t see him anywhere.

Turns out he must’ve got cold when the sun went in and proper buried himself down under one of his hides!! First time he’s burrowed the little bugger!!

Yeh been lovely! Only just got him in myself think he’s loved some outdoors time!
