He’s free to roam the whole yard at all times, it’s almost 1/4 acre. Most of it is grass, which he eats throughout the day. Our grass is getting a few brown spots and we’ve been wondering if it’s safe to get some sort of fertilizer or seed? He gets other foods and we have a garden for him but he will still eat the grass so we just want to make sure it will be safe.

Is that beautiful dog a female? Females are known to brown turf when the urinate....perhaps lay the hose on the browning spots and slowly let the hose flush the areas and that will likely help on the brown spots...

No, with a sulcata or any tortoise living in the yard, you can't use any chemicals on the yard, period.

Greetings, like Yvonne already said, no any food/grass on fertilizers.

But, I’m not sure when in AZ is the best time to plant grass seed?

Here on the east coast, with freezing temps, it’s best to plant grass in early Fall. Summer temps have ended, Fall usually brings cooler (50F) temps coupled with rain. When the time is right in AZ for grass, you could block off the area where those brown dead areas are located, rake up the dead bits, add some soil, peatmoss etc and over seed. Water...and get new grass growing.

Anyhow, just no to fertilizers on areas where Mr Sully is grazing. Good luck.

I know i'm new here but there's a good chance the brown spots are from too much nitrogen. If that's the case then fertilizing will just make them worse. soaking the spots with water will probably help.
