We used to use fertilizer for the grass but for the past two years have not used any. I am wondering if it safe to have the tort out and eating the weeds that have been growing? Thanks for any advice.

Totally safe if you only used fertilizer (without herbicides).

Yes, only fertilizer was used. We redid all of the grass a few years ago and it was used to promote growth in some areas that hadn't done too well.

Thank you so much for the reply! Going to pull some fresh weeds now :D

Fertilizer is fine. The problem is that many fertilizers also contain pesticides and herbicides. "Weed 'n Feed" type products.

You wouldn't want your tortoises to have direct access to a pile of fertilizer, either chemical or natural, but once its absorbed into the soil and assimilated into the plants tissues for growth, it is fine.

The fertilizer we used two years ago is made to be "pet safe", whatever that means. We bought this one because we have a dog. I've looked into it and this product is apparently free of herbicides and pesticides.

The fertilizer hasn't been used in two years and it will never be used again now that I've got a tort. I found some weeds in my yard yesterday that I've never seen, and now that they've been ID'd as edible, and the ground is now deemed "safe", I am excited to feed.

Thank you so much for your reply. :D

Hi Randi.
Glad you're excited and so will your tort be, hopefully.
Might be a bit suspicious at first, but will end up lovin' 'em.
