I have a horsefield tortoise, I feed him every day with more than enough food but he eats it all in one go, how often should I be feeding him? ImageUploadedByTortForum1389741196.857966.jpg

You should be feeding every day, and let him eat his fill...it's pretty hard to over feed a tortoise.

What are you feeding him on? His beak looks a bit long.

Or maybe that's just the angle of the photo?

This depends on what you are feeding him and how you are housing him. If they are grazing on weeds in a large outdoor pen, you should let them eat as much as they want.

If you are feeding grocery store lettuce with a small, dry, indoor enclosure, you might want to cut him back a bit and find some better alternatives.

I thought that was my tortoise when I first looked. They look so similar, down to the last scale! Haha

I have this problem as well and have a Horsfield too, normally she leaves a bit of her food if I've given her more than usual. Maybe you should give your tortoise a bit more food and see if he leaves any.

Because it is hard-wired into Russian tortoises to wander great distances in search of food, it is quite possible to overfeed a Russian tortoise in captivity. They have a very short time, weather-wise, to be able to find food, before the cold weather sets in. So from the moment they wake up in the Spring, they wander and eat, wander and eat.

This is why we stress that Russian tortoises need, MUST HAVE, a large habitat. If they don't have a large habitat, then they just sit there and eat all their food, and get overweight.

A large habitat with several feeding stations all over the habitat so the tortoise has to walk around to find his food, is a very good idea...of course, living outside in a large habitat is a much better idea.

I just took another look at your picture. Gosh, that's a pretty tortoise. Captive bred Russian tortoises are so clean and pretty.

Its the angle. What you are seeing is the other side of his mouth coming around. What a nice looking tort that is!
