I have a russian tortoise and im slightly worried that his toenails are overgrown! Is it safe to help this with a nail file or clippers?

Can you post a picture for us to take a look?

You can carefully clip them back a little at a time. Take care as they bleed profusely if you go too far. (Cornflour is good for stopping bleeding - not ordinary flour)

Adding stones to the enclosure or a piece of rough rock will act as a natural nail file.

Russian tortoises' nails are a bit on the long side naturally. They only LOOK too long, but really aren't.
