maynard is a very nice looking RF. Is that old shell Rot on his platron? I love the little red check behind his eye. :)

Yes unfortunately I think its still present, you would think a reptile specialist would prevent that from happening :(
But yes he is spectacular !

I love his look he is soo cute! I was wondering what you think contributed to him getting shell rot on his plastron.

IMO it believe it was because of incorrect substrate. I remember seeing him at the pet shop for about 1 year on aspen, and when we picked him up, he was on jungle bed. He was in a 2x2 glass enclosure & I never saw a hydrometer, so who knows what how humid it was.

The plastron looks like mine when I was using just Mosser Lee and struggling to keep it damp. It was usually too wet and my guys developed sort of a 'trench foot'. I always wonder if the acidity of the moss contributed to the problem.

The scute material softened and rubbed off for a few layers, and it stopped as soon as I got a better handle on the substrate and dampness issues. My treatment was mostly changing the substrate but I also cleaned it daily and gently scrubbed it with Betadine to help ensure that no germs or fungi were growing there.

My plastrons are now firm, but the wear still looks bad.

I think your tortoise is a beautiful Redfoot. Is he really that shy?

Yes, hes still very timid. I try to call his name and I think hes barely getting used to me
