Pie Pumpkin

I got a small pie pumpkin this morning, about 3 pounds.

I picked this instead of a jack o lantern pumpkin because it's hard to know what fertilizers and pesticides they use with pumpkins they don't mean for people to eat.

Even with this small specimen, I got a lot of food for my torts.




I cut away the outside rind and flesh after washing it, and threw the pieces into the outside enclosures for Darwin and Chili to pick over; I fed the guts to Aretha.

I'm drying the seeds for anti-parasitic medicine, and will grind them, then freeze the powder.

I cut the flesh up into cubes to freeze as food for all of my torts.

As I said, a lot of utility from a gourd that cost under $3.

Yep. Ive also sliced and then dried the slices in our dehydrator. Thin slices dehydrate pretty quickly. In Winter, add a handful to some water, rehydrate, and viola - fresh pumpkin.

I bought one and it was hard as a rock inside and out. So I cut it into 4 pieces and boiled it a few minutes. The torts have really been enjoying it this past week.

You bet they love it, mine do anyway. I grater the raw pumpkin, or boil it for them. They also love the pumpkin vine leaves and the big yellow flowers.
