Poke is not that toxic. The root is used to make a lymph-clearing tincture, supposedly. Didn't work for me, though.
A herbalist told me that a large dose is mind-altering, but in an unpleasant way.
The young, top leaves have much less of the medicinal compound. I sometimes pluck a few to add to my cooked vegs.
The older leaves would probably make you feel sick if you ate a bunch.
Some people blanch the leaves to get rid of the medicinal toxin. I have sauteed them, which is supposed to do the same thing without leaching nutrients and flavor.
Did i say flavor? Yes, poke tastes great sauteed or cooked.
Mmm.... Interesting! I was always told both the berries and the leaves were toxic and could even in some cases be fatal. I read up on the way the process of getting rid of the toxins and it said it tastes a bit like cabbage. Glad to know this, thanks loohan for the info!
