Hi there Tortoise forum! Please help my russian tortoise. When he was in his outdoor enclosure he must of hurt himself because when I took a look at him I noticed a missing "thumb" (not a nail but its a scale on the back of the foot that kinda hangs off. But it naturally hangs off a bit) I immediately cleaned the wound and applied Neosporin. Is there anything more that I can do???? ImageUploadedByTortForum1376267309.812281.jpg ImageUploadedByTortForum1376267502.490215.jpg

And is this an early sign of pyramiding?ImageUploadedByTortForum1376267385.238741.jpg if it is how can I stop it?? I feed him kale, collard greens, romaine, red leaf, carrots, and his cuttle bone but I have to make powder of it and put it on his food because he won't eat the cuttle bone. Please help!!!

Looks like he lost a scale. I'd do what you are doing. Keep it clean and make sure it doesn't get infected. It will scab over and grow back soon enough.

That will heal (just keep it clean and make sure no flies make a mess of it in the interim)...and yes, he has some slight pyramiding....you can help new growth to come in smoother by offering him a warm humid hide and keep him well hydrated by soaks and spraying his food offerings with water...

Well, if you are providing an indoor enclosure as his primary residence (or a good portion of the day)..then you will simply wet the warm humid hide every couple of days or so---BUT you MUST make sure that the humid hide is in a place that will never drop below 80 degrees, wet and cold will offer you up a sick and ailing tortoise...but a warm and humid hide will offer your tort the opportunity to get juicy when he feels the need....and he can go in and dig in and enjoy the warm humid soil in that warm humid hide...but will also allow him to leave it when he feels compelled to....

Also, you can offer up a daily soak for awhile until you feel he is well hydrated...then you can continue his regular food offerings but spray that food with water so he is taking in water with the food consumption...also outside natural sun time in a secure space in necessary for their overall physical health as well as mental health...but keep in mind that this species is the spider man of the tortoise world--superb superb master climbers...I mean literally vertical climber --several feet straight up...so in preparing your outdoor space please keep this in mind...and they are able to burrow down several feet...so I would also line the inside perimeter of the enclosure with some concrete paving stones....this helps to discourage some hazard for digging out....:D

Thx. How deep should the indoor substrate be?
