Hello, first Merry Christmas to all. Please can you help George, or advise. We have noticed a split running from his mouth. He is eating, yawning, having a daily bath and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort but this looks sore. Any recommendations on what we can do or is this part of his growing up and shredding skin. Thank you all in advance. George is just over 1 year old, we are worried sick

This is quite common. I happens when their mouth is forced too far open, like if he was climbing up the wall and he slipped down with the top beak stuck on the wall and opening too wide as he slipped down.

To help it heal, keep it softened with any first aid ointment (don't let a hard scab form), and cut his food up in small bites so he doesn't have to open his mouth too wide to bite.

Would something like vaseline work, Yvonne, or is an antiseptic cream better?

Thank you, thank you, thank you. We did the dreaded thing and used Google first, big mistake. Everything suggested mouth rot, except for the foaming, dribbling, not eating and white in George's mouth, we live and learn. George for the next week will be enjoying 2 baths a day to keep his wound clean and a dab of vaseline on a cotton bud to keep things supple. Then it is finely chopped food to help, ending in lots of TLC (not that he didn't already get that). Thank you again so so much. George will appreciate the support given from people that know best about our little shelled family xxx

Yvonne, thank you so much for your reply, it definitely helped calm two parents and also helped a very young George. George is having 2 baths a day and he seems ok with sticking his head under the water, it is as if he knows it will help him. After drying 2 small of vaseline are put on with a cotton bud, again George seems fine, he doesn't hide his head. Thank you again, take care xx p.s a couple of pictures to show his progress
