You have an Indian flapshell turtle, Lissemys punctata. It's very much a water turtle.

Welcome to the forum!!

You thought he looked like he was drowning because he was frantically trying to swim go get away! He's probably a wild turtle and not used to being handled. To him, you are the monster that's going to eat him.

That's a beautiful turtle. I've never seen a flap shell before. I have a couple of softshelled turtles that look similar. None of my water turtles enjoy being handled.

And just a tid bit of information for you...a water turtle has to be in the water in order to swallow his food, so he won't eat unless you set him up in some sort of pond.
