Possibly elephant ear? Or something else

Hello, I have these growing in a corner of my yard. First thought was elephant ear. I don't think it's taro because of where the leaf meets the stem. The snails apsolutely love them and will eat the whole plant before summer gets here. If it's poisonous to torts then it's got to go. Which will be another project. This thing comes back strong year after year.

Plant is overall less than 4' tall

at first I thought it looked like Gunnera manicata, Dinosaur Food Plant, but it looks too shiny...it's hard to say w/such a close up

It is most definitely NOT taro, and I'm pretty sure it is in the aralia family.
