Pyramiding?

I recently was given this RES that a neighbor's grandson could no longer care for. He was feed a great diet and had plenty of access to the outdoors. But he did not have a basking platform. So basically he was in the water 100% of the time. He seems to have some pyramiding. Why so? Because of no dry land?

I most likely am just worrying! I just want all my turtles to be super duper healthy!

what side effects would this cause for turtle?? do you know how long he was without the ability to bask? ..im just curious

I am assuming his whole life he was without one.

If they don't have a basking spot could cause shell rot ,fungus and many other problems.Is it's shell soft or smell funny if not you may have lucked out and got him out of a bad home in time to make sure he stays healthy.

His shell was a tad soft but now he has a basking spot and the hot Louisiana sun came out yesterday. I'm not joking he stayed on that rock till sundown. He was probably to excited to get off.

Glad you have them now! RES make me sad. They are over bred and people buy them because they're so cute. They come with that little plastic tank and people just let them live in it. Then they dump them when they are not "cute" anymore. I went to Hilton Head a few years back and they had RES a little bit bigger than a quarter, hundreds of them in one aquarium. I thought this was illegal to sell them this small. Makes you wonder how many make it to their first birthday. People just buy them on impulse and do not know proper care for the little guys

I have heard of that and what they are doing is they sell the aquariums with a complimentary res. that way they can by pass the law.

The place around here makes you sign a waver that you are doing research or education with them. In reality they are being kept and then thrown in the wild. I have a pond in my back yard that gets a lot of RES. I can pick out the few that used to be pets. It's really sad because you can tell they are not going to make it.

Yep,They really need to enforce the law to many people are getting away with selling them for educational purposes. To people as pets .It makes me want to buy all of them I see but thats impossible.
