I have been reading a lot of posts, and many of you like to use the coconut fiber (Eco Earth) substrate, which is great stuff, I used it for my hermit crabs... my question is, how do you keep it from molding? Does it get moldy very easily? I always misted my hermie's enclosure with salt water, and that inhibited mold growth. But I didn't know how using fresh water would affect it.

If you mix it up regularly it won't mold. Simply stir it up with your hand so all parts of it gets out to the air at different times...I prefer cypress mulch myself...

Oh no coco coir is wonderful substrate, I used it for a long time b4 I switched to cypress mulch (it was staining my little ivory's legs. Not harmful, I just didn't like the look!) And it doesn't mold. Be sure to change it out every month for sanitary purposes, but don't worry about mold!

Thanks for the replies! I'll probably put some cypress on top to keep things from getting too messy, but stirring it up is a good idea. I didn't have to worry about that too much with my hermit crabs because most of them would bury in for the day, only to pop up at night and party hard till dawn. Every morning I'd have to put things back together, little brats! But I loved them.
