Just thinking ahead for when I start building some buried hides this winter/spring. My ground is like concrete and the new kids would never be able to burrow, so planed on making some subsurface hides for them. In the spring and summer, rattlesnakes are a reality here. And the snakes would also like the sub-surface hides. Will the rattlesnakes harm the tortoises? I know, probably a dumb question, but not sure if fangs could puncture their hide.

Very much doubt the rattlers will be any threat to your tortoises, as rattlers and native desert tortoises often co-habitate w/ no issues.

OTOH, you'll want to be careful reaching into the subsurface hides at all times.

Totally ditto this...as well as be aware of black widows (who REALLY REALLY, did I say REALLY love burrows and above ground hides--when you may need to reach in and all) and scorpions (don't know if you have these bugger where you are or not...likely so if you have rattlers....
