Today we acquired two red eared sliders from a woman on Craigslist. They came with probably $300 worth of stuff and we paid $30 for everything. Both turtles are bright eyed and active they look healthy EXCEPT for their shells. They're very brittle and flaking pretty bad. There aren't any soft spots which is some consolation I guess. They're eating commercial turtle food. I'm not sure what kind of light they were under. If you can provide me with any advice for caring for these babies, please let me know. I want to do best by them. The one turtle is giant and the other fits in my palm. Any idea to genders?

Looks like normal shell shedding to me.

From the pics that one turtle seems adult or adult size....and the smaller one can sustain damage from the larger one if the big n so decides....so I would make sure that as far as personalities go, that they mesh well...

The shells look fine, I put my gals out about every 7 days or so for about 4 hours of sun time and when they are indoors they have a basking light along with a long tube uvb (this gets replaced about every 6 to 8 months)...so as long as you have a uva/uvb light that is good and a place for them to drag their bodies out of the water to allow shell dry off and basking they should be fine....they also need constant water temp of about 76-78 degrees and a good filter set up....they are dirty critters...lol...

By the way, the two turtle are very pretty....;)
