I have a Russian tortoise and I recently got him new bedding. I got him soil. Just regular soil from my local nursery. Is it safe?

Yes it is.

As long as soil contains no vermiculite or perlite, which can lead to gut impaction if ingested, then soil can be a good bedding for tortoises. In other words, potting soil, organic soil, or topsoil. A lot of folks use these successfully. The problem I found with them is that they were more likely to develop fungi and insects. That's why I only use coco coir now.
