Can we see a full pic of your tortoise? Looking at your avatar and this pic, I think you have a russian, not a greek.

Looks like a Russian to me Tom.
My guy got his neck caught in a fence before I got him and he came to me with a scabby sore. I cleaned it and applied a little neosporin (without pain reliever). I checked daily for puss, maggots (he was kept outdoors and we have flies like crazy from the horse barn next door) and odd smells. It healed normally and left a white-ish scar.
