He's new to me. He will sit in the water fit a few min then he starts trying to get out. Should I take him out then or let him keep trying to get out? I don't want to traumatize him.

Is this in a warm soak you are giving him? Or is this in his water dish that's in his enclosure? If it is his warm soak, let him keep trying to get out. He should be kept in the warm soak for 20-30 minutes. If it's in his water dish, let him get out, however, he should be able to get out by himself. If he can't, he needs a better water dish.

If this is an adult russian tortoise, there's no need to soak him at all. Just keep a waterer in the habitat. A plant saucer a little bigger than the tortoise does a fine job providing a drink when he wants one.

It's not his water dish. It's a warm soak. I don't know how old he his but I don't think he's an adult yet. The only reason I've been soaking him is because he's new and still settling in and not eating or drinking yet.

Leave him in the tub. The exercise is good for him and so is the hydration.
