I've just bought a 6 month old Horsfield tortoise. I'm a little worried because he seems to be sleeping most of the time and doesn't seem to be eating much. If people could let me know how much a Horsfield should be sleeping at this age, I would be very grateful. Also any info about vegetables that they like would be great too- the internet seems very conflicted about this.

This is every new tort owners concern! To this little guy, he doesn't know you yet, he thinks you're big and scary and will probably eat him.. In the wild babies burrow and sleep a lot in order to survive. Since it seems like you've just gotten him, I would give him some time to settle in before worrying too much. In the mean time, check your temps to make sure they are warm enough for him to digest food! :) I'll let somebody else talk about veggies... I don't know about horsfields (I have a Greek. When I first got him I had the same worries about sleeping and eating. It took mine about 2 weeks of being in his new habitat to start really chowing down. But he still sleeps a lot!)

Here are some links to help you out. Read through these and see if there are any problems that need to be worked out.

If all your temps and parameters are correct, then you might just be seeing normal behavior. There is diet info in the first link too.

Thanks. That's really reassuring.
