I can't help it but its always so depressing seeing these beautiful animals in these bare newspaper cages. Even the animals look depressed, just sitting there and starring with nothing to do.

Well if you said that so no animals sholud be kept as pets. Do they told you that they are happy that you decorated the enclosure for them ? I bet they are happy in the wild so no animals should be kept,we all knows only that we just hiding the truth keeping an animals in no matters how nice you done in the enclosure is like a human in a jail only is the room is well decorated. Some times people's just want to be look good by saying this and that but at the end thier animals still in a limited spaces.Lol !!!

No. They wouldn't tell you if they liked the enclosure...come on. It was meant as...there are no places for them to hide or snuggle into. It does seem sad. In the wild they hide. They aren't just out in the open. They have nothing to comfort them in that cage.
And yes...if I was in jail I'd want a place to hide lol.

Do you mean that it's OK to cage a dog but not a tort?
No. I was more referring to the substrate of newspaper actually. I wouldn't make a dog live in a cage, but if it's in there temporarily for some specific reason, that's up to its owner.

Yes, in fact, they do tell us. The way myself, and other turtle/tortoise breeders would measure "happiness" is by the animals going on to reproduce healthy offspring. If you are able to raise these tortoises to adulthood, and then produce hatchlings, in that setup, then you might be more justified in saying that, rather then just saying arbitrary things about an animal's "happiness".

In fact, there is plenty of evidence to show that turtles and tortoises respond to environmental conditions. Many rare chelonia can only be bred under a very specific evinronment. Otherwise, they will not reproduce. The simple reason for this, is that an animal is not going to reproduce, and thus bring more creatures into its habitat, if it does not feel there are even enough resources for itself.

You can say that captivity is prison. I don't believe so. There are thousands of captive, happy pets, and in-fact, many of them do not live in "limited space". They live in large, naturalistic outdoor enclosures where they have all their needs met, and more room then they have need for. You can also say that "no matter what, they aren't in the wild". However, we understand quite well their needed conditions for "happiness". This need is meant by replicating the conditions they experience in the wild in captivity. This is called proper husbandry, something I recommend you to familiarize yourself with. There is plenty of information on this forum, many others, and all over the internet on the proper way to care for an animal. A wire cage and newspaper floor is not the proper way to care for any animal.

They are cute little guys, that's for sure.

Do you just have the 3?
Have you considered housing them in more natural-like conditions? Maybe some earthy substrate and a couple of plants to munch on or hide in? It could be a "win-win" ... they'd enjoy the set up and you'd enjoy looking at it ;)

My view is if you are not going to put effort on them please don't keep these as captives pet.
Something similar to human right in jail , exist for a reason. In fact, these little guys did nothing wrong.
