This is a small version of what I'm doing now. I'm that obsessed with not drying out the carapace I put a shield under the CHE so no direct heat was drying the tort out).
More orchid bark was added after this photo. IMG_20160429_211117.jpg

Buy a couple of these and you'll sleep better. They are more accurate because the mechanism is outside the enclosure. Their individual probes can be strung up in different locations to verify that ambient temp is exactly where you need it. High humidity is great for a smooth shell but that has to be coupled with high temps or tort will get sick.

I started building a 4x8x2 viv a few weeks back. My plan is to do exactly what you said with heat. I've had to stop the project for a while due to other jobs I have going on in the house. This is a rough sketch of what I'm doing. The doors are angled so to reduce air space to be heated, and this way substrate doesn't get stuck at the front like on standard vivariums.View attachment 201537
i do love that doors idea, i dont know if id be able to do that though. ive been getting too overwhelmed with planning and figuring out how long each piece of wood needs to be and such. not really used to this kind of stuff.

It costs a tad more but the ceramic glazed saucers I find a bit easier to clean. The difference is marginal, just putting it out there.

Have you looked at the enclosure section on the forum? Some great ideas there...

Yes you can just take domes off with some types. What ever you use be sure they are ceramic sockets and not plastic for CHE's. Sounds good.
will do! im still trying to figure out a sealer but im having no luck.
In regard to the ceramic fixture for lights or CHE's make sure the wattage rating is less than the wattage of the light or CHE you intend on using.

they get too hot for the Bakelite fixtures and might cause a fire.

Am I misreading this? The ceramic fixture wattage rating should be HIGHER than the bulb wattage, right? If Fixture is rated for 200 watts then bulb rated at 150 watt is good. Right?
