I set up the new Sulcata's cage this morning. Here are some pictures of her set-up.
Hope you like them. :)

Setup looks REALLY good! What kind of bulb did you end up buying? The only thing I would suggest is having the bulb a little lower. It needs to be 12-14 inches away from the substrate. Any higher and the UVB dissipates and doesn't reach the little tort.

Good job!

Also, you should feed on a piece of slate tile, so her beak stays worn down. :)

I picked up the 100Watt PowerSun. Holy 80 dollar bulb BATMAN! If it burns out in less then 6 months I am going to cry. Like for real, tears and everything. Lol.

Everything else is what we talked about, sand/eco earth mix. Moss in hide-Box, Picked up the Organic Spring mix from Wal-Mart and I have a lot of vitamin powder.

I put some Rocks in her water dish and buried it so, she can get in and have traction to get out.

I measured the light when I set it up, it is 14 inches from the floor of the cage. Warm-side it sitting at about 100*F in the direct beam.

Thanks for the kind words and help.

I agree with Meg, it sure looks like the bulb is too far away. If you lay a thermometer on the substrate under it is that 100 degrees? What are you using for warmth at night? Some say that they don't use any heat at night, but I don't let my babies get too cool. I use a black light bulb at night for mine...
Meg has done a really good job helping you with her advice. She is right on and I can see she has helped you considerably.

Lol, Batman....I buy my bulbs online. Fill out that form, so you'll get a replacement if the first one burns out.

Like Maggie, said, keep an eye on your temps....After the first few days, all the kinks will be worked out.

The room that the Tort is in is controlled to 78*F. So, at night I was going to have the light off. So, ambient over all temps would be the rooms 78*F. Does that sound okay?

I put the light 2 inches lower, it is now 12 inches from the substrate on the cage. The Diggy Themo I have in the direct beam is reading between 102-105. Warm side is around 90, cool side of the cage is 78*F.

I will pick up some slat this afternoon for her food. That sounds like a good idea also.

Thanks for the help and kind words.

Hi Snakelings, please keep a watchful eye on the bulb. It takes a while for them to burn in. what temps you see now may actually climb or drop. I would not want the temp over about 90F. Some say "You need to provide your tortoise with daytime temperatures between approximately 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit (23 to 29 degrees Celsius). Always make sure that your tortoise has access to cooler areas or shade so that it can cool down when necessary. Nighttime temperatures should be lower than the daytime temperatures, but should not be allowed to drop below 60 degrees Fahrenheit (16C). http://www.sulcata-station.org/basics.html

Here are some good sites with lots of aditional info for your little Sully; http://africantortoise.com/sulcata.htm

Hi Snakelings:

I like the habitat you set up for your new little sulcata tortoise. I especially like that you have it set on a shelf so that your light can hang down from the top shelf. I use clamp lights and the clamps really get in the way. Good job!
