I started doing this a couple years ago… A couple times a year i do a major trim on trees and bamboo, a mulberry tree specifically. so i pile up the branches in his enclosure and he just bulldozes through them. I also hide little snacks in the pile of branches for him to find, like a couple pieces of fruit or veg i have on hand. and depending what i cut he gets built in snacks like mulberry leaves. after about a week when he’s tired of them and the leaves fall off i take away the sticks and gather up the pile of leaves for composting. It’s a nice free way to change things up and turn trash into tortoise treasure!

This is awesome! I found a neighborhood near me with over 50 large mature fruitless mulberry trees. I go there twice a week when the leaves are on, which is about May through November. I cut about 100-200 branches and fill the back of my truck up. Any stray leaves are collected and put in a 5 gallon bucket to be fed out later. When I get back to the ranch, I carry armloads of these branches and disperse them into all of my enclosures.

The only difference is that my tortoises eat them all up over the course of the day, and there are zero leftovers to wilt away. That evening or the next day the branches get chucked. I've tried to mulch the branches, but two different mulching machines just got fouled up with the stringy bark strips.

All the residents of the neighborhood love it, as I keep the trees looking neat and trimmed as I go.
