i fed it to her myself. is this normal for a tortoise? she will go all day without eating and when i come home i try to give her some and she goes crazy
My personal opinion is that it is harmful to the tortoise to learn to take food from the food god's hand. I've finally figured out why my new little baby Texas tortoises don't eat well. The little old lady that I got them from fed them by hand. I don't have time to do that, and I just put them in front of a pile of food. They usually turn away from the food and go sit in a corner.
I had the same problem with a little boxie that someone gave me. An old man found him as a hatchling in his garden and hand fed him until he was a year old, and when the man got sick his son gave him to me. It took forever to train her to eat on her own. Now I'm haveing this very same problem with a little 2 lb. yorkie I got from someone. I have to hold her and hand feed her or she won't eat.
So tortoises, box turtles, dog's...etc. all can be spoiled to a point that we need to enforce some "tuff love".
Do you put the food in the same place every day? Try putting her in front of the food over and over again. Try offering her favorites on the top and the other stuff you want her to eat under that in a little pile. Sometimes if you tear an edge of what ever you are trying to feed they can get a smell of it and then eat it. My babies do that, they turn up their little noses and once I tear the leaf, they chow down. Just a thought!
