Can u hear the lungs of a tortoise through a stethoscope? My vet that saw Tessa says you cant and when i had my russians the previous vet used it every time. SO who lying or whos crazy ? SO either im getting tired of trying to find a decent vet in my area ! Can anyone recommend me one ive been to Ness Exotics and All Creatures Big and Small. Because now nibbler is starting to get drainage from his nostrills. I think the move had alot to do with his and tessas sickness so i want them the best care from now on. Either way i will take nibbler to one of them tommmorow so he can get some meds. I live in Downers Grove , IL 60515 btw. Ive searched so im just looking for personal experince from anyone in the area that has some good vet recs.

Twtraudio, I do not live in the area so I am sorry I can not give a personal recommendation. But I do know that some vets use a stethoscope and some do not. My vet used the stethoscope then let me listen. It is really faint but I heard a slight gurgle (Mine had URI). But if the vet does not have an ear for it then they may indeed not be able to hear it. Mine used a piece of gauze between the stethoscope and the shell so you were not hearing it scratch on the shell.

Here's a list of reptile vets in Illinois:

I hesitate to pose this because I'm not a vet and I don't have access to actually seeing your animal in real life so I DON'T KNOW if your tortoise is actually sick or not. So please use your own better judgment after reading what I have to say:

It is my opinion that some reptile keepers jump on a bubbly or runny nose too quickly. Sometimes a runny nose is just caused by stress and when the stress has been removed the nose clears up. Stressors can be hibernation, breeding, moving to a new house, changing around the habitat, too much handling, etc. It is my experience (and I do have quite a bit of experience with desert tortoises with runny noses) that if you leave them alone and just let them be a tortoise, the nose clears up after a week or so. If the discharge changes color, gets thick or the tortoise stops eating, THEN I get the antibiotics going.
