I live in northwest indiana, so we get usually harsh winters. Id like to stock up on weeds if its feasible. If I were to start collecting them, and dry them, would that work? And what kind of process would that be? Just setting them out until they are dry, and then storing them in something? I plan on planting a small indoor garden for them so my sulcata can graze in her indoor pen, however I've killed a spider plant before. So I would like to have something to fall back on in case my black thumb takes over. Anyone else do this have any pointers?

lmfao... wow when I read this I was like; "wait, am I on the wrong forum? Green confuses me ..."=]

I have the info-commercial Dehydrating thing; great for jerky. I use that to make the Torts dried items I know go bad right away, and I just hydrate them with Strawberry water. (Thawed Strawberries in Luke warm water, once I use the colander, I use the water for hydrating food and Mazuri.... for my fruit eaters =]

well if you plant indoors, then you need a set up like people grow marijuana, with all the lights to make them grow

Exactly. Hydro is amazing! I do hydro. So much easier to grow in Oregon that way....

Would it be easy enough for a plant killer to do? I want to try and avoid doing commercial diet, and I just wasn't sure if dried weeds and grasses would be good enough as a staple diet over fresh stuff for the winter. Any websites or even a thread that would give me the basics of doing an indoor garden? Preferably in steps a third grader can follow? Lol

Be kind to yourself. Order some Mazuri and find out which grocery store greens your guy likes. Gardening indoors under lights is much more difficult than growing houseplants. Most of our familiar houseplants are from rainforest situations and do not require direct sunlights to flourish. Greens and vegetables require a much higher level of light. You end up balancing light, temp, water, and fertilizer and it can become very complicated.
SO..... for this winter, dried weeds plus Mazuri and grocery store greens. AND get yourself another spider plant or snake plant, Boston fern, something relatively tough, and keep it alive for a few seasons before you gear up for indoor gardening.

Commercial vs. not commercial is a matter of debate, and you'll find both camps on this forum. If you were to feed ONLY Mazuri or some other prepared food, you would be limiting your tort's nutrition to only what is contained in that food. Like if you only ate Wheaties for all of your meals. I prefer to feed mostly greens, with some Mazuri.

Maybe I asked the question wrong. Is it ok to feed dried weeds along with hay and if I decide to do a commercial diet over winter? If I just laid them out and dried them in the sun and then stored them in say a rubbermaid tub?

It is fine to feed dried weeds. I would hang the weeds rather than just laying them down to dry. I think they will dry better. After they're dried, they should store fine as long as they are kept in a cool, dry place.

Terry Allan Hall has made a couple posts about this subject. I'm sorry I can't post links right now, but you could search his post history or PM him if you want more information.

storage in a brown paper bag or something of the like may be better: less chance of mildewing and molding than an airtight tupperware assuming your household humidity is not off the charts. The way herbariums and field collectors store dried weeds is between sandwich board layers of cardboard: this could be a good space saving idea to try as well

Oooh. Good idea. I have shelves in my garage that would be perfect and I always have cardboard available. Great idea! Thanks!

Lol I thought that too but the truth is weeds don't take all that to grow. Lol a uvb lamp and water works for my plants. I even grow grass,Collard greens, spinach, and baby romaine in her indoor inclosure.
