For an indoor enclosure? I don't like to, because it is messy. Orchid bark works well indoors.
If it's outside, then absolutely.

Assuming you don't apply pesticides outside near the dirt you're using, it's fine to use (assuming it isn't all sand). You'll bring in a lot of bugs, but that's okay.

What type of soil is it?

I'd prob add something to it to make it better; coir/peat, compost, sand, etc. What I added would depend on what I'm starting with.
